So after testing this a whole bunch, I went back to my 2018 ipad pro which I use regularly for non-gaming stuff (work, web, comics, tv/movie). Native stuff is so much easier to read because it's designed for the phone screen size. For games that are not text heavy, remote play from 1080p type games on Steam/PS are good, but for games that are text heavy either dialogue or menu items or map stuff.the text is just too damn small on a phone, even on the 6.7" 12 pro max screen. I'm definitely looking at what games are available native on the app store in good port versions with full controller support because of this.Īlso this doesn't have anything to do with backbone, but just remote play in general on a phone. Because of the effort of taking the case off and hooking it up and taking it off carefully and putting the case back on and I can see myself in bed wanting to play something and not going to want to bother with all that.įor $100 I think it could be a lot better than it is. ![]() Though if the DS4 one works almost as good, has more buttons and you don't have to take the case off to make it work I may just use the DS4 $10 thing out of convenience over the Backbone. ![]() I like the DS4 controller better, but Backbone may be more comfortable and can get the screen closer to your face. I should get it in another day or two and will try it out. They focused on friend list, screenshots/video captures, and party chat and that's about all you get.įor comparison I ordered one of those $10 Dual Shock 4 phone clips. The app software for the Backbone OS is incredibly barebones. It's nice that you can do this in steam and native IOS stuff should be fine, but should still be in there. Here because the left side will rubberband snap back you have to kind of wedge the phone up a bit as it slides back and then pull out out the phone. There should be a way to press a button on the controller to lock the controller into the full extend range so you can take your hand off the left side and pull the phone out of the connector. It fits but taking it off I was definitely concerned about breaking/damaging the lightning port on the phone. On the 12 Pro Max with that size it's kind of a tight fit. Can't use with a case, so have to take the case off/on each time. Instead you have to press the physical volume buttons which because of bad design are on the bottom whereas in all portable consoles with volume buttons they are usually on the top. Why is there no software volume slider? You have this backbone app OS with a press of a button but it's missing basic things (unless I'm just not seeing it) like a volume slider. But like opening the map in Spider-Man which is a touchpad press doesn't work well. At least on Steam remote play you can just tap the screen for touch controls to pop up and use the steam icon to access the overlay (or hold the Y button) same on PS remote play with the PS button icon on the bottom. ![]() The lack of both a home PS-symbol button and a touchpad button limits a lot of modern games built with a DS4 in mind. It's has fewer buttons than modern controllers and on steam & PS5/PS4 remote play this was regularly problematic. Controller and buttons generally feel good though I tried playing a game with trigger taps and the L2/R2 didn't feel like they'd hold up to rapid tapping. Probably the best way to play a lot of Apple Arcade stuff. +On the plus side, on native IOS app games like Apple Arcade stuff or games with native controller support, it looks and feels great. Kinda underwhelmed and don't think it's worth the price. I got this today and messed around with it for an hour.
